The Science Club for Girls

We are excited to announce that the Massachusetts Academy of Sciences will be collaborating this spring with the Science Club for Girls in bringing a club to Western Massachusetts.

Young woman dissecting a lobsterThe Science Club for Girls was founded in 1994 in Cambridge, MA as a grassroots organization started by parents who were concerned with gender equality issues for girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The club focuses on teaching girls in grades K-12th about science through performing age appropriate experiments. Under the guidance of mentor scientists who are local scientists, graduate students and college students, an environment that cultivates and promotes self- confidence is created. It offers girls, especially those from underrepresented groups, such as, those who will be the first in their family to attend college the chance to explore science. The after school programs provided for the girls are free of charge and aim to encourage leadership, mentorship and experiential learning.

The MAS is looking forward to working with the Executive Director and our latest education fellow, Dr. Connie Chow, on establishing a branch of the Science Club in Western Massachusetts. She has devoted much of her time working on women’s human rights and in education.
